Cavities - prevent them from occuring

Cavities—the dreaded word. Decay causes cavities which eat away at your enamel surface and eventually into the pulp. This can get so severe that you’ll need a root canal.

What causes cavities?

Bacteria! When bacteria covers your teeth and is not brushed or flossed properly, the bacteria forms an acid that eats right into your teeth. If you fail to treat your cavity once the decay begins, you’ll need a root canal as the bacteria seeps right into your nerves.

How to spot a cavity

1) Pain
2) Sensitivity to hot and cold drinks
3) Darkened pits
4) Bad breath

How to treat a cavity

Visit your dentist as soon as you can. After administering an anesthetic so you don’t feel pain, your dentist will eliminate the decay using a drill and laser. After removing the decay, your dentist will fill your tooth with either a metal or a tooth-colored filling. Most people choose tooth-colored fillings because of the aesthetic appeal and their function. Unlike metal fillings that may expand and crack your tooth, tooth-colored ones are more intact and stable.
